How Does NFC Jewelry Work? The Technology Behind Memory Jewelry Explained

NFC jewelry sounds complex, but the experience is beautifully simple. Here is everything you need to know about the technology that turns jewelry into living memories.

You tap your phone to pay for coffee. You tap your transit card to board the train. Now you can tap a bracelet to open a world of memories. The technology is the same — NFC — but the application is something entirely new.

What is NFC?

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range wireless technology that allows two devices to communicate when they are within a few centimetres of each other. It operates at 13.56 MHz and can transfer data in milliseconds.

NFC is already in your life: it powers contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay), transit cards, hotel key cards, and product authentication tags. It requires no battery in the passive device (like the chip in jewelry) — it draws power from the reading device (your phone).

How NFC Works in Jewelry

  • A micro NFC chip (typically 10–15mm in diameter) is embedded inside the jewelry during manufacturing.
  • The chip contains a unique identifier and a link to a secure cloud-based memory capsule.
  • When an NFC-enabled smartphone is held near the jewelry, it reads the chip in under a second.
  • The phone's browser opens the memory capsule — no app download required.
  • The memories stored in the capsule (photos, videos, voice messages) are displayed instantly.

Is NFC Jewelry Safe?

Yes. The NFC chip in Memoruh jewelry stores only a link — not your personal data. Your memories are stored in a secure, encrypted cloud environment. The chip cannot be read from a distance; someone would need to hold their phone within 4cm of the jewelry to trigger it.

You also control who can see your memories. You can set your memory capsule to public (anyone who taps can see), private (only you), or shared (specific people you invite).

Which Phones Support NFC?

All iPhones from iPhone 7 onwards support NFC. All Android phones from approximately 2015 onwards support NFC. In practice, this means virtually every smartphone in use today can read Memoruh jewelry — no special setup required.
